One Day in Dubai: A Layover Itinerary (With Airport Transfer and Timings)
By Lead Adventure Tour 3 min read
If you have a layover of 8 hours or more, or just one day in Dubai, you can still see a lot. The key is to choose one area, keep a safe buffer for your next flight and avoid long queues.
The short answer
- Under 6 hours: stay close to the airport; it is usually not worth leaving.
- 8 to 10 hours: a short guided city tour with a private transfer.
- 12 hours or more: a city tour plus an evening dhow cruise or dinner.
Always check visa rules for your passport and keep at least 3 hours before departure for the airport.
A simple plan for 10 to 12 hours
On arrival. A pre-booked airport transfer means no taxi queue: your driver meets you at arrivals with a name board and tracks your flight. It is a private vehicle from AED 150 per car, available 24/7, with 60 minutes of free waiting time.
Morning. The easiest way to see the highlights is a guided tour. The Old and New Dubai city tour takes 4 to 5 hours with hotel pickup, from AED 110 per person, and covers the creek, Al Fahidi, Jumeirah, the Palm and Downtown photo stops. Attraction tickets, such as the Burj Khalifa observation deck, are not included.
Afternoon. Rest or have lunch in the Dubai Mall, which is air-conditioned and close to the Burj Khalifa.
Evening. If you have time, a two-hour dhow cruise with a buffet dinner is from AED 85 per person. Choose a cruise that ends well before you must be at the airport.
What does not fit in a single day
A desert safari needs about 6 to 7 hours and a late return, so it works best with a night's stay. If you can stay one night, see our 3-day itinerary. A full-day Abu Dhabi trip also needs 8 to 9 hours, so skip it on a layover.
